January 2010; the first three days

Another decade! Slow start, we'll see how it goes!

New Year's day was spent quietly, though we did take a run into the Commercial Mexicana for a few groceries—the place was jammed and they were sold out of many things but we managed to get what we needed. The weather was beginning to show threat of cloud!!

On Sunday we were invited by Cal and Linda to join them and others at Playa Larga. They were going to spend a few hours at the beach property of a friend who lives across the road from them at Playa Madera. Her property is on the beach, at least an acre of coconut palms, unspoiled and undeveloped except for a washroom and shower building. The day dawned cloudy but cleared gradually through the afternoon and became a very pleasant day.

We had first met Anita at Cal and Linda's on Christmas Day and again on Boxing day. Anita is well into her 80's and speaks Spanish and German as a result of having lived in Switzerland as a girl. Her English is also superb—we had supposed she had been raised English/Spanish bilingual, but no—she had learned English as an adult in Mexico as part of operating her tourist oriented business! She is sharp as a tack and great fun to talk with.

We met at Cal and Linda's and proceeded in a convoy of one motorscooter—Cal carrying JC (no, not Him, Juan Carlos!) and two Chevy Trackers bring the rest of the party including of course Trekker and Tia. We drove south, past the Airport, about 20 or 30 kilometers to the southern portion of Playa Larga known as Playa Blanca, via the road to Barra de Potosi.

One of the people joining us had offered to bring some tables. He was told to drive to Playa Larga and before entering the main beach, turn right and drive 2 kilometers. Well “Playa” means Beach, and “Larga” means long and Playa Larga is well named. The village of Playa Larga is at the north end though we were at the section better known as “Playa Blanca”almost at the south end of the beach. This beach is accessible from a road near the airport but to get to the place we were would have involved a long drive over a poor dirt road. If only he had known! We managed to make do with the couple of plank tables there but poor Greg missed the party!

The surf here can be dangerous, but was relatively quiet today according to Page, so a few hardy souls went swimming; Page, JC, Dieter and Amanda, his visiting granddaughter—all survived and seemed to have had a great time!

The hammocks were popular, first claimed by Page and JC then by Cal and his puppy, both tired out after all the excitement.

There was a large selection of food—mostly local specialties; ceviche, tiretas (strips of fish marinated in lime juice) carnitas (similar to pulled pork) etc etc etc. Oh—don't forget the fresh coconut! Trekker got one too!
