Ohio, Pensylvania and New York

We set off today on a fairly long run to Ohio, rolling at 10:30. Not a lot to say about today; we took what had to be the shortest lunch stop of the trip, in Belleview; 20 minutes. Art made a couple of sandwiches while Gillian took the dogs out for a quick “rest room” break. The reason for the rush was that we were parked in town at an intersection where 2 lanes became one. We weren't sure it was legal though there were not any “No Parking” signs.

Two hours later we found the only rest area that we had seen today so dashed in and found the last vacant space. While Gillian took the dogs out Art put his feet up on the couch. 30 minutes here then back to the I90 for all of 20 minutes before turning off to the town of Geneva and Geneva State Park.

The town looked nice, would have been nice to look around for a bit but we were anxious to catch up on the time we had lost in Whitehorse. There is an interesting clock and thermometer in the middle of one of the town's intersections and a sign that seriously tempted us to stay and explore, which we valiantly resisted. (click)

We got settled in with electricity only, no water or sewer though there is a sanidump. $27.00. Last night we had 20 Amp power, no water or sewer, $10.00. Here though there is an available laundry and the beach is only 15 minutes away. This is a very spacious and green park, very pleasant. Tia and Trekker were delighted with their walk and Trekker loved his swim! The satellite dish found the satellite in record time, barely 2 minutes.

When Gillian returned we had to decide our plans for the next day or so. If we went straight through to the border tomorrow we would be at the Niagara Falls border on a Friday afternoon! So. A phone call to an RV Park in Buffalo, on Grand Island reserved a place. We then called Art's old friend Katie (from Kelowna in the 60's) and confirmed our arrival on Saturday afternoon.

Tonight we dined on smoked trout which we had purchased 2 days ago where we bought the pasties. It was nice but a bit disappointing in that it was very strong and very salty. More like smoked cod than the smoked salmon style we had expected. Great for an appie, not our favourite for dinner. But nice enough. Is that confusing? Then of course there was the white wine and chocolate that followed! We watched a bit of TV and then to bed at a not so reasonable hour.

We got up a little after 8:00, so as usual we rolled out of the campground after 10:00. We had thought to refuel at a Flyin J 20 minutes down the highway but as we had just over a half tank we decided to keep on. We were soon over the Ohio/Pennsylvania border and realised that we had missed the rest area where Art wanted to look at the map again and also to clean the windshield a bit.

Then we entered the toll portion of the Interstate 90 and were rolling through Peninsula to New York State on a highway with very few exits and services. At about 1:00 PM we stopped for 40 minutes at a Parking Area, essentially a Rest Area without bathroom facilities, and stopped for a quick lunch and dog walk. From here we phoned an RV Park in Grand Island, next to Buffalo N.Y. and a few miles from Niagara Falls. Surprisingly on a Friday afternoon they still had room! We booked in and set off back down the highway.

Before we knew it we were winding around Buffalo and half an hour after our lunch break we were fueling in Buffalo. $3.199/gallon! The priciest US fuel so far, including Alaska. Should have stopped at the Flying J. Still, better than the $4.00/gallon we'll be facing when we cross the line tomorrow.

Ten minutes here and we and at 2:15 we set off for the RV Park, 29 kilometers away. Then the traffic slowed, slowed some more, then inched, then stopped, then inched some more. We were approaching the toll bridge to Grand Island. Here the 3 lanes fanned out to the 7 toll booths which we eventually reached, paid the fee ($2.80) and now were in one of seven lanes of traffic trying to enter a two lane bridge!

Soon we were over the bridge, found our exit and the RV Park without incident one hour after leaving the fuel stop. Only 29 kilometers back!

This is a very nice well laid out (though would be a bit tight if full) and a great location near Niagara Falls. The sites are around the perimeter with a nice grassy treed park like area in the middle Only complaints; no wireless, tall trees to the south so no Satellite TV, and the dryers weren't very effective.

Parked, leveled, slides out, Art noticed that the Xantex inverter/charger was displaying a warning message: warning. AC input phase reversal. Wonderful. Touch the chassis and get a shock! Art got out his tester which confirmed the problem. We dragged out the extension cord and plugged into the neighbouring vacant site # 11—all is well. He then went to the office to report the problem. The person there made a note to check it when his electrician friend returned.

An hour or so later they arrived at the side and were last seen scratching their heads:

Sites 10 and 11 share one connection post with 2 30 Amp outlets and two 15 Amp ground fault outlets and 4 breakers.

Site 12 (Ours) has one post, one 30 Amp outlet and one 15 Amp connection, no breakers. The 15 Amp didn't work. The 30 Amp had been mis-wired. But where was the breaker?!

Site 13 and 14 seemed to share one connection post with p One 30 Amp outlet and one 15 amp and 2 30Amp breakers and 2 15Amp breakers plus one 100 Amp breaker. But the outlets for site 14 are missing and covered over.

So. What are the 2 extra breakers for? Site 12? And what about the 100 Amp breaker?

Eventually they left for the day and another beer, to return tomorrow after we have left so they can shut off the power and start tracing.

This wiring has been like this since it was redone, along with the sewer and water, by the current owners in 1989 when they bought the park. No one has a diagram!

We figure that the original electrician is sitting up in Heaven (or Hell!?) laughing is butt off!

The good news for us was that the sites on either side of us were not usable so we had lots of space!

Today we also planned to do a load or two of laundry so while Art was fooling with this stuff Gillian set off to the park laundry. Art would have helped but it was in the ladies' shower/washroom! She discovered too late that there was another washer and dryer in the men's room! Would likely have worked better too as they were probably in like-new condition!

Laundry done and dogs fed we walked back down the street to the Pepper Mill Restaurant we had noticed on the way in for our dinner. Choice of beer was “Bud Light and that sort of stuff”. The wine list marginally better, so we opted for one of the specials, fillet steak with a peppercorn/mushroom sauce that was delicious. The California Merlot we ordered with it was adequate, but the steak was superb. Best we have had in a long time, cooked to perfection.

We returned to the rig, typed most of these works, put away that laundry which was dry, walked the dogs and went to bed.

Tomorrow we brave the Toronto and North York traffic as well as the border at Niagara Falls as we go to visit another old friend that we haven't seen in decades.
