Bluff and area

Today, November 1st, we had a short but enjoyable run south on highway 191 to the one horse town of Bluff. (Named for the geographical features surrounding the town, not the habits of local card players!

We booked into the Cadillac Ranch RV Park and were quickly set up, and the dogs walked. Trekker was almost overwhelmed by the horses, donkeys and llamas, and quite interested in the ducks on the pond! Later Gillian went off to find the laundromat and otherwise explore, then came back for Art and the dogs to look around a bit more.

Bluff was a Mormon settlement from the 1880's. The town itself is only a few blocks square, but has a few interesting features, and some lovely old homes in stone. A few of the original cabins and the meeting hall are still standing and are quite well preserved. Part of the old Fort Bluff is now a park and we and the dogs had a good look around. The meeting hall has been re-built, and several long-destroyed cabins are being replaced.

Next day we were off exploring further in the car, driving a loop southwest to Mexican Hat then northwest to Natural Bridges National Monument, then east and south again to Bluff. Mexican Hat was aptly named as you can see in the photo. Gillian took the opportunity to do a little off-road driving, the first time she has done any real 4 wheel stuff, and was not sure if she enjoyed it or not!

On the road to Natural Bridges (hwy 261) several signs warned of a steep narrow gravel portion, not suitable for RV's. Of course we immediately came across a 40' motorhome just exiting that stretch! We found it interesting enough going up-hill in the car. It must have been an experience coming down! Part way up we pulled off the road to let the water truck past!
